PROJECT OVERVIEW
The Derby–Shelton Bridge, a historic structure originally built in 1918, underwent major improvements under DOT Project 126-172. The project focused on modernizing transportation infrastructure while preserving the bridge’s architectural identity.
Through upgraded roadway systems, enhanced pedestrian access, and aesthetic restoration, the project strengthened safety, accessibility, and connectivity between downtown Derby and Shelton.

SCOPE OF WORK
Pedestrian & Cyclist Enhancements
- Expanded pedestrian plaza for safer public access
- Added a bi-directional cycle track on the south side
- Improved connectivity to Derby Greenway
- Enhanced access to Shelton Riverwalk
Structural & Aesthetic Renovations
- Replaced deteriorated parapet walls with historically accurate replicas
- Installed decorative railings
- Added period-style lighting fixtures
- Improved visual appearance while maintaining historical identity
Roadway Improvements
- Reconfigured roadway with an additional eastbound lane
- Improved traffic movement and accessibility
- Full-depth pavement replacement
- Upgraded intersections connecting Route 34 and Route 110
PROJECT IMPACT
This revitalization project restored an important transportation corridor while creating a safer and more accessible environment for pedestrians, cyclists, and vehicles. The improvements strengthened mobility between Derby and Shelton and supported long-term community connectivity.
