PROJECT OVERVIEW
Revitalizing A Historic Transportation Corridor
The Derby–Shelton Bridge, originally constructed in 1918, underwent major enhancements under DOT Project 126-174 to modernize transportation infrastructure while preserving its historic architectural identity.
The project focused on improving safety, accessibility, and mobility while strengthening connectivity between the downtown areas of Derby and Shelton.

PEDESTRIAN & CYCLIST ENHANCEMENTS
- Widened pedestrian plaza for safer public access
- Improved accessible pathways for foot traffic
- Added bi-directional cycle track on south side
- Better connections to Derby Greenway & Shelton Riverwalk
STRUCTURAL & AESTHETIC RENOVATIONS
- Replacement of deteriorated parapet walls
- Historically accurate restoration work
- Decorative railing installation
- Period-style lighting upgrades
ROADWAY IMPROVEMENTS
- Additional eastbound lane added
- Improved traffic movement and circulation
- Full-depth pavement replacement
- Upgraded Route 34 & Route 110 intersections
PROJECT IMPACT
This revitalization project restored an important transportation link while creating a safer and more pedestrian-friendly environment. The completed improvements strengthened connectivity between Derby and Shelton and improved accessibility for residents and visitors.
